On the official Fenty site, South Sudanese model Aweng Mayen Chuol is photographed wearing the Roped In ear cuffs long, but if you look closely, the model’s visible scars were left untouched. This was a subtle, heartwarming editing move, especially in an industry known for its unrealistic perceptions of beauty. Aweng posted the image on her socials, writing, “@fenty close up. The culture.”

“i love that the images used on fenty are not retouched, and that the models skin is not perfect by societal standards,” one Twitter user wrote. Another user responded, “Wow! As a girl with scars, this really touches my heart. I’ve never had any reason to feel less terrible about my scars until seeing this.”

In an old interview with Dazed, Aweng opened up about the struggles she faced growing up with her scars. “People tell me I look like a jaguar or that I’m ‘exotic’,” she told Dazed in 2018. “Sometimes I just want to shout at everyone: ‘Look at me, I’m not just a scar, I’m a human.’ But I get it, it’s a curiosity. I know I’m different, I know my facial features are different, but to me that’s beauty.”
